COVID-19 and the flu are both viruses that attack the respiratory system. While these two viruses share many common symptoms, such as fever, cough, and nausea, they are different viruses that affect the body differently. COVID-19 is a more serious virus, which can pose more severe complications than the flu, especially in those who are considered vulnerable due to age or health. Additionally, COVID-19 is more contagious than the flu, making it spread rapidly throughout our communities. The best ways to protect yourself from both of these viruses is by wearing a face mask, washing your hands frequently, and actively exercising social distancing.
So, what makes COVID-19 more contagious than the flu?
One of the leading causes for COVID-19 being spread more easily than the flu is because COVID-19 particles seem to linger in the air longer than flu particles do. COVID-19 is primarily spread from person to person through respiratory droplets that are released whenever an infected individual breathes, talks, coughs or sneezes. These contaminated droplets can be inhaled, making their way into your nose or mouth. However, COVID-19 particles that are smaller than these droplets can survive in the air for minutes to hours. This makes airborne transmission to COVID-19 a risk.
What this means is, an infected individual can vacate a space, but leave active COVID-19 particles in their place. This leaves the space seeming harmless as no one is present, which may make individuals feel comfortable removing their mask. Keeping your mask on in public spaces is vital to protect yourself against this highly contagious virus.
Another reason we are seeing such widespread infection is because the incubation period for COVID-19 is longer than with the flu. An individual may not display symptoms of COVID-19 for up to 2 weeks, while other infected individuals may never show symptoms. The flu has an incubation period that averages somewhere between 1 and 4 days. The longer it takes for a patient to realize they are sick, the less caution they may exercise.
