Who Is At Risk?
While some heart attacks come on suddenly and without warning, most start slowly with intensifying pain or discomfort. If you or a loved one experience any of these signs seek immediate medical attention, it can be the difference between life and death.

Anyone can have a heart attack but people that are over the age of 60, overweight, have diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure are at higher risk. If you fall into any of these vulnerable categories it is important to talk to your doctor to make sure you are doing everything you can to monitor and manage these conditions.

Warning Signs of a Heart Attack
There are several warning signs that a heart attack may be coming on but unfortunately many people ignore these signs. Here are some of the most common indicators you may be close to having a heart attack:

Chest discomfort: Across the board the most common warning that a heart attack is coming on is chest pain or discomfort. The feeling has been described several ways, such as an uncomfortable pressure, a tightening fist, and a fullness concentrated in the center of the chest. If the feeling last for more than a few minutes or goes away just to return immediately call 911.

Rapid heartbeat: Leading up to a heart attack your body is working extra hard to pump blood to your heart through clogged pathways.

Lightheadedness: If you are experiencing lightheadness in addition to any other symptoms this can be a warning sign

Arm pain: Often times when your body is close to having a heart attack the heart will send pain signals to other parts of the body. The left arm is a common place for this to occur and will feel like muscular pain.

Shortness of Breath: As your heartbeat becomes more rapid your breathing will as well which can leave someone at rest to become short of breath.

What Should You Do?
If you experience any of these symptoms, do not ignore them! Call 911 and take Aspirin. Aspirin slows clotting and can help keep a heart attack from becoming worse.
