What Is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a condition that causes patches of skin to become irritated. This irritation causes the affected patches to become visibly inflamed, red, cracked, and rough. Often these patches are also itchy, scratching can cause these symptoms to become worse. In some cases, these patches can even break the skin, causing blistering and bleeding. This condition is most often developed in early childhood and appears more frequently in patients with a family history of this condition. While this condition can cause a rash to appear anywhere on the body, the most common place patients will develop an eczema rash is on the arms and behind the knees. Some patients outgrow this condition but others will have it for the duration of their life.
