What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a bone disease that is characterized by a decrease in the density of bones. This decrease in bone density affects the strength of your bones, leaving them fragile and vulnerable to injuries. Osteoporosis means “porous bone,” this is because this disease causes the bones to become much more porous, making them compressible and spongelike. This weakened state can result in bones breaking easily from a fall or physical trauma. In extreme cases of osteoporosis something as mild as a sneeze or minor bump can result in broken bones as well.

Normal bone is made up of protein, collagen, and calcium, all of which give bone its strength to hold up against injuries without breaking. Whenever you look at a healthy bone under a microscope, the inside will have a honeycomb pattern with small spaces. Whenever someone has osteoporosis, their bones with have much larger holes and spaces between them.

While osteoporosis can affect any bone in the body, the most common areas in which someone experiences a bone fracture related to this disease are the spine, hips, ribs, and wrists.

The following factors have the ability to increase your risk of developing osteoporosis:

-Women have a higher chance at developing osteoporosis
-Caucasian and asian races

-Thin, petite body frame
-Family history of osteoporosis or other bone related issues
-Smoking cigarettes increases your risk

-Drinking alcohol is excess
