For the last several years, there has been a rise in parents choosing family physicians instead of pediatricians to care for their children.  As parents are making the determination of the best possible care for their children the first question is, “are family practice doctors pediatricians”.

It has been said that a family physician is a pediatrician and an internist combined into one specialty. One distinguishable factor is the training of family physicians. He or she must complete 3 years of residency after medical school. As a medical resident, they train in pediatrics and several other areas such as internal medicine, orthopedics, and obstetrics and gynecology.  Medical residents spend several months training in each discipline. This specialty education provides comprehensive health care for individuals and families of all ages and genders ranging from infants, children, teens, young adults, adults and senior citizens. This means your child would be able to see the same doctor from birth through adulthood. It also means that all members of your family can receive their primary care from the same doctor.

As you can see, the primary difference between a pediatrician and family physician is one treats adults and children and the other treats children exclusively.  Some parents choose pediatricians to care for their children because of the specialty.  However, says, “families of today are focused on a more holistic approach to healthcare and the well being of the total family. Many families feel when one family physician can care for the entire family, it is a tremendous benefit to everyone.

Nonetheless, there are still parents who feel a pediatrician is best, based on their specialty and exclusivity.  However, other parents feel that it makes sense to choose a family physician because they get exposed to a wide range of patients in their practice. They feel, while a pediatrician may accept a 20-year-old patient, that patient could easily encounter medical conditions that typically occur in adults.

Despite differences in the types of patients, pediatricians and family doctors serve similar functions. They are usually the first medical professionals you see when you suspect that your child has an illness.
