Everyone’s body is different, but for those who have bodies that do not process insulin efficiently, insulin resistance and prediabetes may occur.

What is insulin and why does our body need it?

Insulin is a hormone that is created by the pancreas to help navigate the glucose in your blood into your muscles, fat, and liver, so that it can be used for and converted into energy. Glucose enters your body through the foods you consume. Additionally, your liver has the ability to create glucose whenever you are not consuming foods with sugar. Whenever the glucose levels in your blood, also known as blood sugar levels, rise after you have eaten, this will send a signal to your pancreas to release insulin into your blood. This insulin works to lower your blood glucose levels in order to keep them in a normal and healthy range.

What is insulin resistance?

Whenever the cells in your muscles, fat, and liver do not have an effective response to the insulin, your body will struggle to remove glucose in your blood. This leads to higher blood sugar levels and is identified as insulin resistance. Whenever your body develops a resistance to insulin, your pancrea will respond by making more insulin to try and assist the glucose in your blood into your muscles, fat, and liver cells. If your pancreas can produce enough insulin to accommodate the weak response in your cells, your blood glucose levels will continue to stay in a healthy range.

What is prediabetes?

Prediabetes in the term used to describe whenever the glucose levels in your blood become higher than a normal level, but have not reached a level that is high enough to qualify as diabetic. Prediabetes most often occurs in patients who have a history of insulin resistance or who have a pancreas that is failing to produce enough insulin to maintain blood glucose levels in a healthy range. When the body fails to produce enough insulin, excessive amounts of glucose will remain in your bloodstream, failing to enter your cells and convert into energy. This explains why fatigue is often associated with insulin resistance. If this pattern continues, in time you may develop type 2 diabetes.

What are the symptoms of insulin resistance and prediabetes?

In many cases, those suffering from insulin resistance and prediabetes may not experience any symptoms. In some cases, patients with insulin resistance or prediabetes may feel excessive thirst, the frequent need to urinate, darkened skin around the neck, and skin tags. These symptoms are not always a sign of insulin resistance or prediabetes but should be taken seriously.
