Limb Salvage
WELLSPIRE LIMB SALVAGE CARE
Limb salvage is a surgical procedure used to save a limb that is at risk of amputation due to injury, infection, or disease. The goal of limb salvage is to remove the damaged tissue while preserving as much of the limb as possible. Limb salvage most often occurs when a patient has diabetes, an inflammatory disease that causes a bone infection, or a bone that is receiving insufficient circulation. We work closely with vascular physicians to optimize circulation to the patient’s extremities. Careful wound care, sometimes with a negative pressure wound healing device, also helps skin heal better following surgery. Recovery from limb salvage surgery can vary depending on the extent of the procedure but usually involves physical therapy and rehabilitation to help a patient regain strength and functionality.
